A Reason to Believe



A popular girl on campus, Charlotte, attends a wild party while her boyfriend Wesley is out of town. When she realizes she has become too drunk, she leaves the party. But Jim, who she danced with at the party soon joins her and she becomes forced into a sexual encounter. Feeling ashamed and self-blame, it is difficult for her to find the courage to speak out. When she does, many of her friends do not believe her. Meanwhile, Jim honestly does not think what happened that night w! as rape. But as members of his own fraternity and campus feminist groups begin to unpiece the grey areas, the ensuing experience challenges the trust and friendship of college students who thought they would be friends forever. A year in the life of a small Italian coastal town in the nineteen-thirties, as is recalled by a director with a superstar's access to the resources of the Italian film industry and a piper's command over our imaginations. The Mafia wants to buy Pop's downtown karate studio in an area planned for redevelopment. They get Pinky and his thugs to pressure Pop into selling, but accidentally kill him. The karate students call the kung-fu expert, Black Belt Jones, for help. Pop's daughter, Sydney, refuses to sell the building. The M! afia, who learns that the City is planning a new civic center is buying the land where it will be, and the one piece they don't have is the karate school owned by Papa Byrd. Now Big Tuna, the Mafia Don's right hand man goes to Pinky, their representative in that area and they tell him that he owes them $250,000 but in lieu of paying him they want him to get Papa Byrd'd school. He tries to muscle him but he throws him out and one of the teachers calls Black Belt Jones, a friend of Papa Byrd to talk to him but before could Pinky accidentally kills him. Before dying he said that the school belongs to Sydney, whom nobody knows. But Black Belt knows that Sydney is his daughter whom he hasn't seen since she was a child. Black Belt asks a government friend of his to find her and he does and she arrives for the funeral and learns about Pinky and goes there and roughs up some of his people. Pinky then goes over to the school and with some back up manages to subdue them and take one ! of them, and demands either Sydney turn the school over to him! or pay him $250,000. Black Belt asks his friend to look into it and discovers the Mafia connection and decides to kill two birds with ine stone it seems that his friend wants him to break into the Mafia stronghold and get some photos that they have and some hot cash. Black belt succeeds and hold $250,000 for Pinky and after giving it to Pinky, he calls his boss to tell that it was Pinky who raided his place. Having been discharged from the Marines for a hayfever condition before ever seeing action, Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith (Eddie Bracken) delays the return to his hometown, feeling that he is a failure. While in a moment of melancholy, he meets up with a group of Marines who befriend him and encourage him to return home to his mother by fabricating a story th! at he was wounded in battle with honorable discharge. They make him wear a uniform complete with medals and is pushed by his new friends into accepting a Hero's welcome when he gets home where he is to be immortalized by a statue that he doesn't want, has songs written about his heroic battle stories, and ends up unwillingly running for mayor. It's a peaceful day in a local city when suddenly, duck J.J. Fate appears to lecture us on how "fate" isn't to blame for accidents, people are! He uses Donald Duck as an example. Donald is extremely accident prone. He lights his pipe in a room with a gas leak, slips on a throw rug while carrying a fish bowl, overloads! electrical outlets, and continually falls down the stairs. Finally, Donald has had enough and fixes his house guaranteeing no more accidents.
